Get ready to experience the top movies with all of your senses when London debuts its new 4-D cinema.
4-D cinema technology will soon offer a brand-new experience for London moviegoers! The 4-D technology immerses the viewer in a 3-D world and then engages the senses for a one-of-a-kind viewing experience. The technology itself was actually developed in South Korea in 2009. It wasn’t until 2015 that Cineworld brought the technology to the U.K. While the technology is still relatively new to the film industry, more than 100 movies have been shown using 4-D technology. British movie enthusiasts encouraged the introduction of 4-D by stating that smell was the one sense that would heighten their movie experience. “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” was actually cited as the movie for which viewers would like to be able to experience smell.
Moviegoers in a new state-of-the-art cinema in London will now be able to feel the wind on their face, get caught in a snowstorm or experience a dense fog without ever leaving their high-tech motion seat in the theater. Other 4-D elements include bubbles, lightning, water and a number of different scents. Engaging the senses takes the already enjoyable 3-D experience and moves it to the next level. Viewers will actually feel part of the action as hard hits are made and gusts of wind blow through. This brings to life aspects of the movie that may not have been all that memorable in a normal or even 3-D viewing experience.
This year’s blockbuster release, “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom,” was voted the top movie that viewers would like to experience in 4-D. Other movies that topped the polls as being good candidates for 4-D included:
- “Avatar”
- “The Life of Pi”
- “Star Wars: The Last Jedi”
- “Titanic”
4-D technology won’t be the right fit for every movie. The following characteristics will make for a great 4-D experience:
- Tone of the movie: Being fully immersed in a dark tone movie for more than two hours may not be the best experience.
- Subject matter: Does the movie include fun elements such as rain, wind or intense action that would delight the senses?
- Length of the movie: Your ability to withstand jostling may only last so long.
Patrons may have experienced similar 4-D technology at a theme park in the past and enjoyed quite a thrill, but imagine enjoying that experience for an entire film. 4-D technology can certainly take movie watching and turn it into an amazing experience. To be sure, the 4-D movie experience will be unlike any other that you have experienced to date when watching a film. Technology has the ability to spoil us in a manner, so once viewing a movie in 4-D, you will likely never watch a movie the same way again.
So far, the following upcoming films will feature the 4-D technology.
- “Avengers: Infinity War”
- “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom”
- “Deadpool 2”
However, the theaters with this technology are still very limited.
Watching a movie in 4-D will certainly cost you more money, but the interactive experience is well worth the price tag to get in. Hold on tight; your seats are about to take flight!
